Inez Smit makes abstract paintings in oil and acryl.
She paints structures and surfaces which have a specific proportion, making the beholder unsure about the scale of the work.
The question remains unanswered: do we see an archetonic view or do we zoom into a detail in our direct surrounding.
In her canvasses, Inez researches whether a moment occurs during the process in which you can acknowledge the ever-lasting “incompleteness”.
She tries to create a moment of loss of control with as few references as possible.
The present forms are placed on the surface in such a fashion, that they disrupt the balance which presented itself to us initially. They have a place, but it could have been different just as easily. Unpredictable contrasts in the use of colour play an important role in this process.
Take the little sticker on the carton box for instance, which ended up in its place quite thoughtlessly.
It has faded by now; it has been moved and left a stain.
On the carton box, a new sticker has been stuck, fresh colour.
The old sticker now has a different proportion with other forms and colours, time has become visible.
This is where the painting begins with Inez Smit.
